Turned and Spun is my contemporary craft studio, where I make small-batch and one-off objects through woodturning and metal spinning. I like working with materials that already have a character of their own, whether that is the grain in the wood or the surface of metal. Each piece is made by hand and shaped through process, care and finishing, creating objects that are considered, useful and made to last.
The Philosophy of Making
Turned and Spun is built around the belief that making is a way of understanding materials properly.
Joshua’s work develops through turning, spinning, forming, testing and refining, with the process guiding many of the final decisions.
Material honesty is central to this approach. Joshua pays attention to how materials behave: how they move, resist, mark and change. Rather than forcing wood, metal or any other material into a fixed idea, he responds to their qualities and limits through practical work at the bench.
Each object grows through testing, adjustment and careful finishing. For Joshua, the value of making sits in the relationship between material, process and use, creating objects that are honest in their construction, considered in their form and made to be handled, kept close and valued more over time.

A process of rhythm and control. As the wood rotates, the tool gradually reveals form, grain, and proportion.
Transforming flat sheets of metal into three-dimensional forms through controlled pressure and movement.
Where the object meets the hand. A finish can soften, protect, or reveal the material beneath.
Bespoke Commissions
Turned & Spun accepts selected commissions for handmade objects in wood and metal. Whether you are looking for a one-off vessel, a decorative object, a special gift, or a small series of pieces, Joshua can work with you to develop an object with material character and personal meaning.
